The Fetus People are in full bloom here in TN, and some of their antics have even made the newswire at Feminist Majority.
Abortion opponents plan to reintroduce a constitutional amendment on Thursday to ban abortion in Tennessee. Last week, anti-abortion groups launched a campaign to pressure the Tennessee House legislature to pass a resolution (see PDF) banning abortion. The resolution states, “Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of an abortion.”
The Tennessean reports that Tennessee House Representative Dolores Gresham notified the House Speaker that she intends to bring the resolution up for a floor vote. If 66 of the 99 representatives support her motion, the measure will go straight to a up-or-down vote on the floor, instead of returning to a subcommittee.
Note that SJR127 FAILED in subcommittee, by a 6-3 vote.
Note only that, but former state Rep, David Flowler’s group, Family Action Council of Tennessee, with help from the Eagle Forum, is leading a misinformation onlslaught, according to the action alert I received from the Nashville Women’s Political Caucus. As I check FAC’s site, you guessed it, the erroneously termed “partial-birth” abortion is being used and abused as the reason to support the passage of SJR127. So yoiu don’t have to dirty yourself at their site, the heading on their “take action” page for support of SJR127 states:
SJR 127 Will Allow Us to Stop
Partial-Birth Abortion in Tennessee.
Knock, knock. It is already a federal law that every state must follow, even TN.
But, SJR127 is NOT about late-term abortions, which are performed, at most, 1-2% of all abortions and are necessary for the life of the mother. SJR127 is the yellow-brick road for the Fetus People to ban ALL abortions in TN when/if Roe v Wade is ever overturned. SJR127 has one sentence that will put TN women fully under the misogynists thumb:
Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding
of an abortion.
There is NO provision for rape, incest or the life and health of the mother.
Tomorrow’s vote is for the House to pull the legislation from subcommittee, bypassing House Committee Structure. I urge all Tennesseans to contact their representative and, as the Nashville Women’s Political Caucus says,
Ask your house representative to respect the House Committee Structure and NOT PULL SJR127 from the committee
The next event from the Fetus People takes place in Knoxville, the day before Mother’s Day, with a Fake Funeral procession for aborted fetuses. Help us get out factual information on maternal mortality by joining the Blogswarm.
Here are some topics to get you started:
state maternal mortality rates; Ectopic pregnancy; hydrocephalus; late term abortions; legislative hinderances (24 hour waiting periods, parental consent, abortion bans); Crisis Pregnancy Center mis-information/coercion, physician shortage/intimidation; “gag rules”; South Dakota; “trash can babies,” health care for women (and lack thereof); adequate prenatal care (and lack thereof); misinformation about birth control; Kansas, Darfur…
Shortwoman and I would love to see a huge response.
