Keep moving, nothing to see here. The Great White Hope, Fred “lawn order” Thompson, did lobby for a family planning group,
Billing records show that former Senator Fred Thompson spent nearly 20 hours working as a lobbyist on behalf of a group seeking to ease restrictive federal rules on abortion counseling in the 1990s, even though he recently said he did not recall doing any work for the organization.
According to records from Arent Fox, the law firm based in Washington where Mr. Thompson worked part-time from 1991 to 1994, he charged the organization, the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association, about $5,000 for work he did in 1991 and 1992. The records show that Mr. Thompson, a probable Republican candidate for president in 2008, spent much of that time in telephone conferences with the president of the group, and on three occasions he reported lobbying administration officials on its behalf.
Mr. Thompson’s work for the family planning agency has become an issue because he is positioning himself as a faithful conservative who is opposed to abortion.
Now, according to the likes of Captain Ed, this shouldn’t bother anyone, you should just ignore the fact that Fred “lawn order” lied to you about lobbying for this group. In fact, Ed is so fucking delusional, he goes on to claim that the Great White Hope didn’t even do any actual lobbying work. And, somehow, “consulting” becomes a non-issue, when in fact the issue is selling oneself out, to apparently, any bidder.
Of course, that doesn’t cover the multitudes of industries and groups that hire multiple lobbyists. Any group would be foolish to hire only one lobbyist in Washington.
Then there is more delusion from the right, as they get down on their knees and try to justify to themselves that Fred “lawn order” Thompson is their next Great White Hope.
What’s interesting, I think, is that the news outlets that are pushing this story are not conservative. They seem to think that the story will somehow discredit Thompson among conservatives, presumably because conservatives are too dumb to understand how law firms and the legal process work. The appropriate response from the right would be, I think, a yawn. So far, that’s what we’ve seen.
Funny how righties looking for the Great White Hope have to justify to themselves that their best hope hasn’t lied about selling out. Look, if the dude took on the work, for a few extra bucks, then he took on the freaking work, it’s that fucking simple. But your Great White Hope made this an issue when he lied about lobbying for a Family Planning Group in the first place, and the righties on their knees praying for the day Fred “lawn order” Thompson finally (if at all) throws his hat into the ring, made this an issue by trying to justify to everyone else that this is a non-issue.
Lying is an issue. It denotes dishonesty. And people do not want a dishonest president. (Too bad it took so long for so many righties to see that in the current resident of the WH).
