Tennessee’s Mayberry Machiavelli, Zach “the poor can eat crumbs” Wamp weighs in on Fred “lawn order” Thompson, believing that an announcement to formally enter the presidential race is forth-coming.
“My view is that he’ll enter the race at some point just in the coming days,” said Wamp, a key supporter of Thompson.
The lawmaker said the actor turned senator turned actor did not want to join the race too soon but is “doing everything a presidential candidate should do.”
Thompson has long been expected to join the race and the Law & Order star has traveled the country and raised millions. He will take part in a large fundraising event in Washington, D.C. on July 29, but Wamp did not say when a formal announcement would come. The lawmaker said, however, that “a couple dozen members” of the House would publicly support Thompson at the event.
There’s a lot of days ahead of us, and at least according to this Hill article, we have more confirmation that Thompson is violating the “testing the waters” section of the Campaign Finance Reform laws. I pointed to this the other day, but here’s the pertinent part I had quoted from ABC:
Federal election law allows prospective clients to raise limited funds to test the waters and determine whether they will be viable candidates without declaring their candidacy or being required to disclose their contributors and expenditures.
However, the statute provides that a candidate is no longer “testing the waters” if he raises funds in excess of amounts reasonably required for exploratory activity, or amasses funds to be used after candidacy is established.
As far as I’m concerned, this country has had enough of administrations flouting the law, or just plain out and out ignoring the law, whenever the fuck they please.
Any Congresscritter in Washington to back a law-breaker should think twice about the political suicide they will be committing. The people will not stand for it. And the people will continue to point out the Washington Elite that believe they are above the law, including ignoring the very law they helped create. Yeah, Fred, I’m talking about you.
Update: While I’m on my Fred Roll, here’s the latest polls, which also shows us how out of touch with reality TN’s Mayberry Machiavelli is.
And the leading Republican presidential candidate is … none of the above.
The latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll found that nearly a quarter of Republicans are unwilling to back top-tier hopefuls Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, John McCain or Mitt Romney, and no one candidate has emerged as the clear front-runner among Christian evangelicals. Such dissatisfaction underscores the volatility of the 2008 GOP nomination fight.
Unwilling. Wow! But, let’s take a look at these numbers.
More Republicans have become apathetic about their top options over the past month.
A hefty 23 percent can’t or won’t say which candidate they would back, a jump from the 14 percent who took a pass in June.
Giuliani’s popularity continued to decline steadily as he faced a spate of headline headaches, came under increased scrutiny and saw the potential entry of Thompson in the mix; his support is at 21 percent compared with 27 percent in June and 35 percent in March.
Everyone is on the downslide, a 14% drop in support is a pretty heft downturn for the undeclared. Fred, make the right choice — stay home. But, it’s even funnier when that sentiment is coming from conservatives!
Among the legions of undecided Republicans is Barbara Skogman, 72, a retired legal assistant from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She isn’t at all excited about any of the prospects. At one point, she favored McCain. At another, she was open to Giuliani. Now, she’s leaning slightly toward Romney but says she’s far from sold on him.
“I’m looking for a strong, honest person. Do you know of any?” she joked. She had an easy time detailing why she was queasy about each of the most serious contenders. “Isn’t that sad?” Then she reached a conclusion: “I just don’t know.”
Very sad, indeed, that conservatives don’t even feel the field of choices are honest. Says a lot!

IT’s funny how scared Fred has all the Dems. Isn’t it? You are quite obsessed with him. Interesting, eh?
Scared of Fred? Hardly. Actually, watching the Fred Factor play out gives us lefties a documented, textbook example of the mindlessness of the right. For some other folks, the Fred Factor further validates the mindlessness of the right.
Who in their right mind (pun intended) would want a dishonest, exploiter of the law, that just wants to act the part, as the leader of the free world?
Psst! I think you meant “flout”.
Yup, Carol, you’re right, thanks for the correction. both words are quite appropriate for Freddy-boy
